1. BLUSH PINK

Bedroom colour ideas

This shade of pink is a big trend right now, but even when that wanes, it's a lovely soothing colour to have in a bedroom. Easy on the eye, pale pink will have a calming effect and it's said to be a nurturing colour that represents femininity and warmth. It soothes and balances. It's great with other colours of similar tones too – like these three grey shades.

'This Nordic colour palette plays with the winter light that we all crave so much but has soft tones that are warm and comforting,' says Gary Moores, Designer at Fired Earth. 'Mixing colours together can be quite daunting for some, but the results are a breath of fresh air. Orchard Pink (shown) is a colour for gentle revival and a sweet soft tone for bedrooms.'

2. EMERALD GREEN

Button & Sprung

Refreshing and peaceful, green also represents restoration and harmony. It falls in the middle of the colour spectrum and therefore offers balance. Combined here with grey and copper, it creates a fresh look that works really well in a classic bedroom.

'Our Eliza bed, which has a gently sweeping headboard and button detailing is shown here in a gorgeous Nickel soft wool that sits beautifully next to Farrow & Ball's Green Smoke paint. You can set off these deep, moodier tones with some on trend copper accessories to give a more contemporary look to your room,' says Adam Black, co-founder of Button & Sprung.

Paint & Paper Library

This is a great example of how to use paint in your bedroom but in an innovative way. The grey skirting board creates a cohesive look, while the crisp white bedding teamed with colour pops of teal and bright yellow finishes the look perfectly. Grey is a versatile and safe colour with a calming influence, and using it in a fresh, modern way (like seen here), can make your bedroom scheme look stylish.

'Use grey paint to break up expanses of wall in large rooms,' suggests Ruth Mottershead, Marketing Director at Paint & Paper Library. 'This looks especially sophisticated in bedrooms as the colour block serves as a visual headboard and focal point in the room.'

4. SPICED HONEY

Bedroom colour ideas

Dulux

Dulux's Colour of the Year, Spiced Honey is ideal for a bedroom. It's warm and comforting, and looks great with the colour pop stripes seen here. Team it with rose pink for an all encompassing feel-good style. Spiced Honey comes under orange in colour psychology, so it represents a vibrancy that gives you energy and is essentially a happy colour.

'We don't want to commit to putting just one shade on the walls in case we want to change other elements of the room like the bedding and accessories in the future – the solution is to fall in love with a palette and to have fun with details like adding bands and stripes of current favourites,' says Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux. 'Choose a beautiful versatile neutral like Spiced Honey as a backdrop which will work with everything and paint one or two vertical stripes in colours that you have a crush on right now. You can swipe left whenever you like and repaint these smaller details to refresh the look without having to do any major redecoration.'

*Spiced Honey (walls), Teal Lux (large stripe), Auburn Flame (small stripe) matt emulsion, Love Letter (door frame) satinwood, all from Dulux

To create this look try:

Valspar

Sometimes's it's worth being brave and going all out for a deep dark shade. Representing confidence, blue has a calm authority, it's said to lower the heart rate and is a sign of intelligence. The key to making this colour work is by balancing it with accessories – the colour of the wood and the pink bedding all help to do this. Layer different textured throws for interest and they'll act as a great contrast against the smooth dark walls.

'Be brave and go bold even in small spaces by using deep and moody shades,' says Jason de Kauwe, Marketing Communication Manager at Valspar. 'Deep blues will help transition interiors into the winter months and are a great way to add depth to spaces. It creates a contemporary look, which will work perfectly as a backdrop for on-trend brass accents and powdery pink accessories.'

*Night Swim, Premium Blend v700 walls and ceilings emulsion, £28 for 2.5L, Valspar.

In colour psychology, it's a 'down to earth' shade representing tranquility and balance.

'When planning your ideal bedroom always take into consideration the type of colour palette you want to use before you start anything. There are three main palettes to consider – monochrome, harmonious and complementary. 7. SCARLET

Carpetright

This is a bold and beautiful colour and not for faint hearted! How you use it is key – it needn't be all over and you can paint a single wall or an alcove – less is more after all. Passionate and energising, red exudes strength and motivates. Grey is a great partner for red; the neutral quality grounds the red and you can accessorise with textured soft furnishings like cushions, throws and patterned carpet.

'Think carefully about the use of the space and its existing colour scheme,' says Anna Del Molina, Buyer for Carpets & Rugs at Carpetright. 'Consider a minimalist style flooring or rug if you already have a focal point, such as a statement wall colour in the room or choose a bold, eye-catching design to brighten a neutral decor. You don't necessarily need to match prints and patterns but opting for a style that shares a colour with something else in the room, such as the walls or bedding, will help tie the look together.'

*Gleneagles carpet, £18.99 per m2, Carpetright

Farrow & Ball's Rectory Red No. 217 – a warming red that will look great with an off-white
